‘Magic of Millets’ for Rural Women Self Help Groups

Seminar And Competition Organised By WICCI Rural Tourism Council Goa   

Panaji :WICCI Rural Tourism Council Goa organised a Seminar & Competition titled ‘Magic of Millets’ for Rural Women SHGs in Goa, as a joint initiative with Goa State Rural Livelihood Mission (GSRLM) & Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera, at the Directorate of Art & Culture, Patto .

3 women from SHGs – Jyoti Palekar, Shobhavati Velip and Poornima Sawant won the first, second and third prizes respectively as part of the Competition among the women SHGs for the best-cooked dish with millets, for which prizes were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera. The competition was judged by Sunetra Talaulikar, ICAR-KVK, Chef Ajinkya, Goa Marriott Resort & Spa and Mini Ribeiro, State President, WICCI Rural Tourism Council Goa

Speaking on the occasion, Mini Ribeiro, State President, WICCI Rural Tourism Council Goa said, “As part of the International Year of the Millets initiative, WICCI Rural Tourism Council Goa, is organising a Seminar and Competition for Rural Women SHGs in Goa, titled, ‘Magic of Millets,’ to spread awareness about the importance of Millets in our daily diets and to encourage more women to cook with these at home. This is part of our key focus areas of community outreach in the spirit of knowledge-sharing and building inspiration toward empowering women. Through this Seminar, we hope to enable the women SHGs to spread the message of millets in Goa villages and get more homes to start using these for better health.”

The sessions included, ‘The Importance of Millets in Our Diet’ by Sunetra Talaulikar, ICAR- KVK, North Goa and ‘My Journey as an Entrepreneur working with Millets’ by Sucheta Bhandare, Founder, Earth Poorna.

Millets are the synonym to healthy eating and thus, this awareness programme, will enable the SHGs to connect to their roots when they used to cook healthy meals with millets such as Nachino, Bajra, Jowar,” explained Bhushan k. Savaikar, CEO, Goa State Rural Livelihood Mission (GSRLM).

Rtn. Raghavendra Shetiya, President, Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera, said,As Rotarians, we are called upon to use our skills and expertise to serve a community. Vocational service, is the essence of Rotary and serves as the foundation from which we serve our communities around the world. Taking this objective forward, we, at Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera have partnered with the WICCI Rural Tourism Council Goa and the Goa State Rural Livelihood Mission (GSRLM), for a seminar, ‘Magic of Millets’ for women Self Help Groups, which will help popularise the use of Millets in rural households through their involvement. It will also help in training them to use Millets in products which can be sold to be a source of livelihood for them.”

A National Business Chamber for Women, Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, (WICCI) boosts and builds women’s entrepreneurship and businesses through greater engagement with government, institutions, global trade and networks. WICCI and its manifold multi-sectoral and sector-specific Councils at International, National, Regional, State and City levels, suggest from time to time concrete steps and recommendations to relevant government authorities, engage in community outreach and collaborate with a variety of institutions.
